Misunderstandings About Yoga

Thanks to social media, more and more people get to know yoga and start to run their own practices. However, there are some misunderstandings about yoga (here we only talk about yoga poses, not the philosophical or spiritual aspects of yoga).

The most common misunderstanding probably is, many people, especially men, comment that they are not flexible, therefore they cannot practice yoga. Well, flexibility can be gained through regular practices. Many of beginners cannot put their hands on the floor when they first try to do a standing forward bend pose. But after a few months, they could easily hold their big toes with the fingers, without bending the knees. I also have some very hard-working students, in order to do Monkey Pose (also known as Yoga Splits), they practice hip opening about 10-20 mins every day, and within two months’ time they could do full splits easily. These are only two examples, there are many more poses which require flexibility but can be only achieved through guided regular practices.

Another common misunderstanding is that yoga practice is just about gentle stretches, does not make the practitioner perspire. In fact, yoga poses require flexibility as well as strength, and holding a yoga pose is not as easy as a non-practitioner thinks. Even practicing yoga in an air-conditioned room, you can feel your sweat dripping if you follow the teacher’s instructions closely.

I am sure there are other misunderstandings about yoga that might have prevented you from trying it out. Our suggestion is not to jump into conclusion too fast. Keep an open mind and give it a try. Maybe yoga will become your new hobby in life. We at EzFit Singapore provide customized yoga classes for different levels and at the comfort and privacy of our home.  Give us a try!
